The Tameer Towers development on Reem Island was designed to be the focal point of the Shams master plan and a new iconic structure for the region. The site was split into residential and commercial sections, which included two residential towers comprising 63 stories and two commercial towers comprising 43 stories dissected by an eight-lane highway in one direction and a canal in the orthogonal direction. A 76-story commercial tower was designed to be the centerpiece of the development, and featured a distinctive reinforced concrete diagrid exoskeleton. The diagrid created a continuous lateral system for the tower’s exterior.
Thornton Tomasetti provided structural engineering from concept through design development phase for this fast-track project, which was slated to be completed in 18 months. The use of BIM on the project enabled coordination between multidisciplinary design teams and facilitated the collection, organization and distribution of vast quantities of information required to meet the tight deadlines. The project is currently on-hold and is not expected to move forward as designed.
