Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, Level 2 Renovation

The Tufts University School of Dental Medicine has created a multi-phase master plan to update its facilities and has chosen to focus on including sustainability and environmental quality as part of its initiative. Thornton Tomasetti served as the LEED consultant for renovations to level two of the School of Dental Medicine. After the vertical expansion of the building that added five more floors, the functions from the second level were relocated to allow renovations to happen with minimal disruption to the program.

Level two houses the pre-doctoral teaching program and an emergency clinic. LEED goals were met by purchasing Energy Star electronic equipment, using energy efficient lighting and low-flow water fixtures, and the purchase of Green-e Energy Certified Renewable Energy Certificates which offset almost 100 percent of the power consumption for the first two years after completion. To demonstrate the various green building features, informative green building signage was installed throughout the second floor. An indoor air quality plan was also created and ensures a healthy interior environment for the lifespan of the building.

Energy Concepts

We perform whole-building energy analysis and modeling throughout design and into occupancy to predict and measure operational performance. We use advanced analytical tools to provide data-driven strategies that maximize energy savings, increase occupant comfort, reduce carbon footprints and effectively incorporate renewable energy technologies. Our team regularly develops in-house tools that enhance our modeling capabilities and ability to accommodate increasingly complex design problems. We also use simulation programs such as Weather tools, Ecotect, Therm, Window 6, DOE-2.2 (eQuest), EnergyPlus and BLCCA.
