Urban Assembly High School for Green Careers
The Urban Assembly High School for Green Careers (UAGC) will open September 2009 in the existing Brandeis High School Building on Manhattan, sharing the building with other high schools. The UAGC will be designed to prepare students for college and careers in the emerging “green jobs” economy. Urban Assembly (UA) plans to turn the existing Brandeis HS building into a more sustainable building and implement greener operations and maintenance procedures, as well as to use the building and its sustainability properties as an educational tool.
Thornton Tomasetti, in collaboration with Orbicon | Leif Hansen, Jonathan Rose Companies and TDX Construction, developed a phased “greening master plan” for the Brandeis HS building that encompasses the following highlights:
- Photovolatic array on roof
- Micro wind turbines on roof edge
- Weather station
- Vegetated roof areas
- Rainwater collection
- Lighting upgrades (Motion sensors, LED lighting, hybrid solar lighting)
- Upgrade to more efficient fans, motors and pumps
- Replacement of R-22 coolant chillers
- Replacement of obsolete oil-fired boilers
- Replacement of inefficient window AC units with central system chilled beams
- LEED EBOM certification
- Ongoing commissioning
