Thornton Tomasetti understands when height and slenderness makes structural behavior a key design parameter. This is frequently the case in high rise residential construction, a natural result of the smaller floor plates desired for apartments compared to larger office floors, and the smaller cores serving apartments, with fewer elevators and less mechanical space needed than in office towers of comparable height.
We have designed high-rise apartments in Korea, hotels in China, and condominiums atop offices in New York, as at the Random House and Bloomberg Tower projects. Sometimes building configuration, structural mass and inherent damping of the materials provides for occupant comfort. In other cases, where supplementary damping is needed to keep residents comfortable, we have applied pendulum tuned-mass dampers, stacked two-mass dampers and tuned liquid column dampers with good results.
