Temporary Structures

With limited exposure to environmental loads and a short lifespan, temporary structures offer both great design freedom, and correspondingly great design challenges. We must establish criteria that are safe but not overly conservative. Framing must be both extremely economical and recyclable. Materials and member sizes may differ from those in conventional, permanent structures, so mental flexibility is important. Working with a variety of materials on many project types with diverse sizes in different areas of the world, we exercise our flexibility every day.

Movable Structures
Mariners Stadium, Seattle
Where portions of façades must move laterally or vertically to create openings, we help detail motorized systems that are water-tight, cost efficient, and integrated with the overall enclosure framework. We coordinate innovative retractable stadium roofs with their main structures, for example at fabric roofing panels opened and closed by cable systems integrated with the roof framing. Through our partnership with Hardesty & Hanover, we design and implement the complex structural-mechanical-electrical interfaces for any type of kinetic architecture.
