Protective Design’s 50 years of experience in providing physical security analysis, advice and design – to architects, building owners, developers, and public agencies – makes us the premier provider of protective design services. We assess vulnerability to multiple hazards and provide balanced and economical mitigation for every type of structure.
We collaborate with team members to achieve appropriate solutions that also uphold each project’s aesthetic and budgetary goals. Intent on avoiding the bunker mentality displayed by others in hardening components, our blast engineers embrace their role in the aesthetic success of every project. We craft solutions that provide the required protection without compromising unique architectural features. And because structural hardening can be expensive, we work with project stakeholders to educate them about their options and to determine appropriate performance targets. Differing performance requirements call for different design solutions – with different price tags.
Long before the events of September 11, 2001, heightened public awareness that buildings are vulnerable to terrorist attack, Protective Design began establishing design principles that would safeguard structures and their occupants. In the wake of the 1983 bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon, we developed engineering guidelines for the Department of State that form the backbone of the protective design criteria used by the government and private industry today.
