In honor of National Engineers Week we’ll focus on the different ways Thornton Tomasetti’s technical staff make a difference in the world around us.
PZFlex is a Finite Element Modelling package for piezoelectric and ultrasound applications, ranging from inspection of modern carbon fibre materials in aerospace and diagnostic probe design to electro-mechanical filters for telecommunications.
In short, the same software that can help keep you safe at 35,000 feet in a Boeing 787 can also save lives in the operating room. PZFlex has been used to examine the carbon fibre composite structure similar to those used in planes (left) while also serving to analyse the high intensity sound field in the human abdomen for ultrasonic surgery (right). Modelling of these applications drives the development of lighter, stronger materials in the aerospace community and safer, more effective treatments for cancer for the medical community.
With solvers designed and optimised to simulate these massive problem-sets, PZFlex provides engineers with the ability to simulate complete systems in accelerated time-frames, thereby reducing costs and accelerating design cycles. It has found extensive use in global engineering companies like GE, Siemens, Rolls-Royce, Samsung, and many more.
