Thornton Tomasetti, the international engineering firm, announces that Gunnar Hubbard, AIA, LEED Fellow, a principal and the firm’s Sustainability practice leader, has been elected a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). He will be honored during the Investiture of Fellow Ceremony at the 2015 AIA Convention in Atlanta, Ga. in May.
AIA Fellow designation (FAIA) is awarded to architects who have made significant contributions to architecture and society, and to those who have achieved a standard of excellence in the profession. Fellow candidates, vetted by a jury of industry experts, must be a member of an AIA chapter for at least 10 years. Election to fellowship not only recognizes the achievements of individuals, but also their significant contribution to architecture and society on a national level. Gunnar was elected in nomination category five, “To make the profession of ever-increasing service to society.”
• Hubbard has more than 25 years of experience as an architect, consultant, educator and advocate for projects throughout the United States, Asia, Europe and the Middle East.
• He has played a key sustainability role on a wide variety of projects including CityCenter Las Vegas, an $8.4 billion mixed-use complex; the green certification for 12 million square feet of existing real estate in Sweden; and a net zero energy LEED Platinum education center in Maine.
• Hubbard is a licensed architect in California and a LEED Fellow. He is a long-time member of the AIA, a founding member of the Maine chapter of the U.S. Green Build-ing Council (USGBC), a LEED user reviewer and guest expert for the USGBC, a board member of Community Housing of Maine, and board member of AIA Maine, where he is current chair of the Committee on the Environment.
• He graduated from the University of Vermont with a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies and holds a master’s degree in architecture from the University of Oregon.
