Sin City’s newest entertainment venue, T-Mobile Arena, opened April 6 in true Vegas style with fireworks, a concert by rock band and city natives The Killers and Wayne Newton singing “Viva Las Vegas” and “My Way.” Thornton Tomasetti provided structural engineering services to Populous for the 20,000-seat, 670,000-square-foot multi-purpose venue. The arena will host 100 to 150 events annually, including Ultimate Fighting Championship matches, boxing, hockey, basketball, awards shows, concerts and even bull riding.
The steel and concrete arena is constructed of 7,000 individual steel beams with a combined weight of 7,100 tons. The long-span roof, which covers a 350-foot-by-450-foot seating bowl, creates a fully column-free space allowing for unobstructed views of the floor and stage areas. Amenities include 44 luxury suites, two party suites, eight event-level suites and more than two dozen private loge boxes. A two-acre outdoor space, Toshiba Plaza, will be used for pre-event functions and special events. The arena is designed for LEED Gold certification.
