Thornton Tomasetti, the international engineering firm, will fund an annual memorial scholarship for engineering students at the City College of New York (CCNY) in honor of the firm’s former president and CEO, Daniel Cuoco, who passed away in September 2014. The initial award will be for $5,000, with its first recipient to be announced in spring 2016.
• The City College of New York will select the scholarship recipient. Successful applicants will be high-achieving students pursuing a bachelor of engineering degree and a career in structural engineering. Cuoco graduated from CCNY in 1967 with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. He also received a Master of Business Administration degree in management from Adelphi University.
• Cuoco joined Thornton Tomasetti in 1971. He was named Thornton Tomasetti’s president in 2002 and CEO in 2008. He held those positions until his retirement in May 2011 after 40 years with the firm. He was an active participant in the company’s growth from a 15-person, single-office firm to one that, today, employs more than 1,000 people and has offices around the globe.
• Throughout his career, Cuoco served as a mentor to young engineers. He also helped establish Thornton Tomasetti as a world leader in structural design and was an early adopter of emerging technologies such as Building Information Modeling.
• Those wishing to donate to the scholarship fund can make checks payable to City College Fund and indicate “Daniel Cuoco endowed scholarship” on the memo line. Send the check to 160 Convent Ave, Shepard Hall, Room 166, New York, NY 10031. Attn: Elena Sturman, executive director.

“Dan Cuoco was an exceptional engineer, partner and friend. During his storied tenure at Thornton Tomasetti, Dan often served as a mentor to young engineers. We are developing a memorial scholarship fund in Dan’s honor as a way to provide college-age students with the opportunity to pursue their dreams of a career in engineering, much like he did. The annual award will keep Dan’s spirit and memory alive as he continues to serve as a role model for young engineers.”
