Liling Cao, Ph.D., P.E., LEED AP BD+C, a vice president in the New York, Wall Street office of Thornton Tomasetti, the international engineering firm, has been invited by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) to attend the 2017 U.S. Frontiers of Engineering Symposium (USFOE) on September 25-27, at the United Technologies Research Center in East Hartford, Conn.
This year, the USFOE will bring together nearly 100 innovative engineers under the age of 45 from U.S. companies, universities and government labs to discuss leading-edge research and technical work across a range of engineering fields. The goal of the symposium is to facilitate cross-disciplinary exchange and promote the transfer of new techniques and approaches across fields in order to sustain and build innovation among the next generation of engineering leaders. Participation is by invitation-only following a competitive selection process.
Cao is the sixth executive from Thornton Tomasetti to attend an NAE Frontiers of Engineering Symposium. Other FOE alums include senior principals Peter DiMaggio and Anurag Jain, principals Elisabeth Malsch and Peggy Van Eepoel, and associate principal Pawel Woelke.
• Cao has more than 10 years of experience in the investigation, stabilization and rehabilitation of various types of buildings, parking and long-span structures, bridges, scaffolds, and utility facilities. She is also highly skilled in the areas of litigation support, blast engineering, seismic design, and emergency response.
• As the head of the Advanced Analytics group within the firm’s Forensics practice, Cao uses sophisticated modeling and analysis tools to solve complex problems associated with compromised structures or specialized designs.
• She is proficient in the use of nonlinear and dynamic analysis to evaluate the mechanical behavior of structures under extreme loading conditions such as wind, earthquake and blast events, and employs a range of simulation techniques and forensic information modeling for data collection and processing. Cao is pursuing new technology and innovation by leading research and development efforts through academia and industry alliances.
• During her career, Cao has worked on a number of notable projects across the globe, including Devon Energy Center in Oklahoma City, Shanghai Tower in China, Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, the collapse of the I-35 Bridge in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, Transbay Transit Center in San Francisco, California, and MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. She was also involved in developing the blast-resistant design for Hudson Yards in New York City.
• Cao is a licensed professional engineer in New York and Maryland. She is a member of the American Institute of Steel Construction, American Society of Civil Engineering, and International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering.
• She holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and a master’s degree in structural engineering from Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China, and a Ph.D. in structural engineering from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
