Robert Sinn, P.E., S.E., FACI, F.ASCE, FIABSE, LEED AP BD+C, a principal in Thornton Tomasetti’s Chicago office, will be a featured presenter at Lehigh University’s 2018 Fazlur R. Khan Distinguished Lecture Series in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
Sinn’s presentation, “From Bilbao to Jeddah: An Engineer’s Journey,” will take place Friday, March 23 at 4:30 p.m., and is open to the public. It will focus on two landmark projects from Sinn’s distinguished career; the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain and Jeddah Tower in Saudi Arabia. The three-story museum was said to have changed the course of building design when it was completed in 1997. The Jeddah Tower, currently under construction, will be the first man-made structure to reach one kilometer in height. Conceived 20 years apart, the engineering logic and structural systems development for these projects are important chapters in the ongoing story of computer-based geometric and structural engineering analysis. The presentation will compare the two projects and focus on key technical challenges as well as the analytical tools used to realize these groundbreaking designs.
With more than 30 years of experience in structural engineering and analysis, Sinn is known for his innovative work with tall and supertall structures located around the world. In recognition of his contributions to the industry, Sinn was named a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Concrete Institute and the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering.
Established in 2007, the Fazlur R. Khan Distinguished Lecture Series at Lehigh University honors one of the foremost structural engineers of the 20th century, Dr. Fazlur Rahman Khan, a pragmatic visionary who helped usher in a renaissance in skyscraper construction and left a legacy of excellence in structural engineering and architecture. Sinn is the fourth Thornton Tomasetti/Weidlinger Associates engineer to serve as a distinguished lecturer, joining Thornton Tomasetti founding principals Charlie Thornton (2014) and Richard Tomasetti (2008) and Weidlinger Principal Jeremy Isenberg (2008).
