This year, between January and June, Thornton Tomasetti employees flew a total of 4,093,192 miles for business, which is equal to approximately 164 trips around the world. While these 1,679 flights emitted 646,731 kg of CO2 into the atmosphere, last month we offset all of our time in the sky during the first half of 2018 with a $6,467 investment in renewable energy projects. We will offset the remaining months of 2018 travel in January of next year.
We partner with the offsets provider Carbonfund.org to support the global transition to clean energy. Our donations help back renewable energy projects that may include landfill gas-to-energy plants in Massachusetts and New York, an 850 kilowatt wind power project in the Fujian Province of China, and a 9 megawatt hydroelectric plant in the state of Karnataka in India.
Thornton Tomasetti set a company-wide goal of achieving carbon-neutral business operations by 2030, and in addition to purchasing carbon offsets for all our air travel since 2014, we’re taking steps to reduce our total air travel. We are enabling conference calling in all of our locations, equipping all offices with videoconferencing screens and holding corporate meetings in places where we already have the most people.
