John has been involved with the design, installation and testing of 117 TMDs with a total mass of 1,400 tons.

John Swallow has more than four decades of experience in acoustics, noise and vibration control engineering. Over the course of his career, he has been involved in all facets of the business, from the design of vibration isolation products and tuned mass dampers (TMD) to seismic and vibration monitoring and analysis. John joined Thornton Tomasetti in 2017 through its acquisition of Swallow Acoustic Consultants, a firm he co-founded in 1980.

Broad Background
John’s body of work includes healthcare facilities, sports and entertainment venues, university and research buildings, residential towers, government facilities and courthouses, hotels and cultural centers. He has particular expertise in such areas as theater, office and residential acoustics and noise control, environmental noise, vibration analysis and damping of structures. His acoustics projects include creating a design guide for cinemas and its application to hundreds of screens in the US, Canada and UK, and developing track layout, noise mitigation and noise monitoring protocols for the Honda Indy Toronto race course in Canada. Among John’s recent projects are the acoustic design of six 1,800-seat performing arts theaters and more than a dozen Four Seasons Hotels, including the development of noise and vibrations specifications for all of its international hotels.

Industry Contributions
A recognized expert in the industry, John has published numerous papers and taught at the University of Toronto. He is active in several professional organizations and has participated in many committees, including serving as past chairman of the International Organization for Standardization Drafting Committee for the revision of the ISO 2631, the International Standard on the effects of vibration on the human body.

Outside of Work
John’s interest in acoustics goes beyond the built environment to include the science of singing. An accomplished vocalist, he is past president of the Oakville Choral Society and is a baritone with the Etobicoke Centennial Choir.
