I particularly like aviation work. There’s nothing more rewarding than traveling through an airport and seeing a building I designed being enjoyed by so many people.

Since joining Thornton Tomasetti in 2003, Mark Koenigs has worked on a diverse portfolio of projects around the globe, including healthcare, commercial office, residential and large-scale aviation projects. While the majority of Mark’s work revolves around new design, he has led a number of renovation and construction engineering assignments, conducted construction issue investigations and performed extended on-site fieldwork in Abu Dhabi, UAE and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Mark relies on this breadth of experience and technical skills to bring creative approaches to project challenges.

Pragmatic Approach to Design
Whether it’s a new airport hangar or the ongoing evaluation of existing structures such as his current work at San Francisco International Airport, Mark keeps constructability in mind. His knowledge of construction methodologies helps to accelerate project schedules while keeping within budget. Among the challenging fast-track projects in his portfolio are the Greenside Hangar Complex at the Quantico Marine Corps Base in Virginia, and Epic Deep Space Auditorium in Verona, Wisconsin.

Disruptive Innovation
Mark is constantly exploring new solutions from creative procurement methods and cutting-edge materials such as cross-laminated timber to emerging techniques like performance-based fire design and modular or panelized design. This focus on combining industry-leading technologies with solid engineering experience allows Mark to deliver high-quality projects with greater efficiency, including current residential and hospitality projects in San Francisco. Technology is also driving innovation and interoperability in project delivery methods for Mark’s work on the new Uber Mission Bay Headquarters in San Francisco and the 1100 Clay project in Oakland.

Outside of Work
Mark spends most of his free time with his family. He enjoys coaching his two daughters in soccer and he is planning to learn how to play guitar with his older daughter. He enjoys running and cycling. His goals are to one day complete a triathlon and bike across his home state of Iowa. That will have to wait, however, until he wraps up work on a major home renovation project.
