Thornton Tomasetti has been appointed by Turner and Townsend, and Squire and Partners, the project architects, to provide façade engineering services for the refurbishment of 20 Grosvenor Square, located in Mayfair in central London.
Constructed in the 1930s, the building served as the United States Naval headquarters in London for decades. The master plan focuses on returning the development to its original role as a residential building featuring bespoke apartments.
The project team has designed cladding components and opening elements to conform to the project’s high-standard requirements in terms of thermal, acoustic, security and safety performance. Specific attention was given to the aesthetics as the building falls within the Mayfair Conservation Area. The project team consciously sourced off-the-shelf elements wherever possible to reduce the construction program and facilitate easy and cost-effective maintenance. The scope included analysis and follow-up considerations regarding the thermal performance and condensation risk for both opening elements and new and retained walls to achieve sustainability target values.
