555 12th Street, N.W. in Washington, D.C.
Thornton Tomasetti performed structural services for the build-to-suit headquarters of one of the city’s premier law firms. Also known as the Thurmond Arnold Building, the structure consists of 12 stories of office and retail space over four underground levels. Its façade blends contemporary design and classicism to harmonize with traditional Washington architecture. The building features a 10-story atrium that was constructed in two phases: half of the circle was built in phase one, while the second half was completed during phase two.
The two-phase project was constructed adjacent to a major subway station and occupies the entire city block. The structural system combines conventional reinforced concrete slab construction below-grade with a post-tensioned two-way slab system for the upper portions of the building. The one million-square-foot building rests on a mat foundation with a slurry wall.
