Chabot College’s latest LEED Gold building features a number of unique sustainable features. Radiant heating and cooling in the double-height atrium’s concrete slab replaced the use of traditional forced air heating and cooling. The atrium’s glazing changes color in response to changing sunlight and temperature to optimize daylighting and energy efficiency. The building is engineered with roof and ceiling air scoops to provide natural ventilation. A wave ceiling disguises the plenums for this natural ventilation system. A rooftop weather station is linked to the mechanical system allowing it to adjust its settings based on exterior conditions.
Thornton Tomasetti provided structural design of the two seismically separated structures connected via a sky bridge. Each side utilizes steel framing and concrete tilt up panel with infill light gauge steel that seamlessly blend with concrete cladding panels and structural steel. The unique geometry of the structures was a challenge because the radius buildings intersect.
The Community and Student Services Center houses admissions, counseling, financial aid, special programs, and the assessment and career and transfer centers.
