Coronado Club Room and Boat House in Coronado, Calif. Bryan Wayne Photography.
Thornton Tomasetti provided structural engineering for a combined public Club Room and Boat House, located on the southeast side of Glorietta Bay Park. The Club Room provides community space for local youth programs and the Boat House stores nonmotorized watercraft including kayaks, paddle boards and row boats.
The structure is a combination of wood frame and steel connection with a gravity system consisting of wood joist framing and custom-made exposed glu-lam trusses. Wood shear walls and steel moment frames provide lateral resistance to seismic and wind loads.
The certified LEED Silver facility benefits from scenic views, natural daylighting and a prevailing ocean breeze. Thornton Tomasetti worked closely with the architect to achieve sustainable goals. Requirements for natural light and ventilation posed significant challenges at the roof level where steel Vierendeel trusses were used to allow setbacks for windows.
