General Bridge Inspection – 2011-2012

Thornton Tomasetti performed biennial, interim and special inspections for the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT). During this cycle, 350 bridges, with 2,000 spans, were inspected. The work included structural and safety inspection, report preparation, inventory verification, updating Level 2 load ratings and other ancillary tasks. Challenges included coordination with various agencies, including the New York City Department of Transportation, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, MTA Bridges and Tunnels, Amtrak, New York City Transit, CSX, and Metro-North Railroad. Inspections above railroads required entry permits and flag-person protection over active tracks and railroad property. Nighttime work was equally challenging due to lighting installation with only three- to four-hour lane closure permits. Field teams also performed emergency inspections as requested by NYSDOT. Thornton Tomasetti also designed repair details and performed load ratings to address red-flag conditions.
