Hay Barn Stabilization in Broomfield, Colo.
Since its initial purchase by Mary and Lafayette Miller in 1864, Rock Creek Farm has served as a road house, a stage station for the Overland Mail Stage route and a cattle ranch. The property was purchased by Boulder County in 1980 and is a designated cultural landscape under the Boulder County landmark program.
In 2014, Thornton Tomasetti was retained by the Boulder County Parks and Open Space Department to conduct a structural assessment of the property’s Hay Barn. Thornton Tomasetti conducted site visits to the historic property to evaluate and asses the structural integrity of the barn’s exterior, interior and foundation.
Based on field examinations, it was determined that foundation settlement at one corner of the barn had resulted in racking of the structure. Thornton Tomasetti performed an analysis of the structure under current code-required loads as well as historic loads in order to develop stabilization repairs necessary to remediate the racking.
Repair specifications and construction documents for structural and architectural repairs were provided in compliance with the U.S. Secretary of the Interiors’ Standards and Guidelines for the treatment of Historic Properties.
