Damage assessment in Baja California Sur, Mexico.

Minera Caopas Hurricane Odile Evaluations

  • COMPLETION DATE
    2015

Overview

On September 17, 2014, Hurricane Odile inflicted widespread damage in the state of Baja California Sur and caused lesser impacts on the Mexican mainland and Southwestern United States. Two days later, the insurer for Minera Caopas, one of the world’s largest gypsum producers, asked Thornton Tomasetti to provide on-site damage assessment support on September 21.

The Thornton Tomasetti team assessed damage at the port – a critical facility for Minera Caopas and determined the scope of damage to a mineral conveyor, a ship loader and ship mooring and berthing dolphins. Thornton Tomasetti also provided support for loss adjustment and reviewed reinstatement plans, costs and schedules.

The remote marine location, limited services, post-storm conditions and the specialized equipment each posed unique challenges.
