Thornton Tomasetti provided structural engineering for an award-winning, two-story, 19,650-square-foot student services building that includes classrooms, computer laboratories, campus program offices, conference rooms, storage space, and a reception area. The new facility consolidates programs spread previously throughout the campus, while allowing for anticipated departmental growth.
The LEED NC Silver-certified building features a 6,500-square foot, two-story lobby space partially illuminated by a clerestory roof. Extensive glazing and perforated aluminum canopy supply daylight to more than 70 percent of the building’s occupied spaces, integrates with the lighting control system to reduce energy use, and provides stellar exterior views for staff and students.
The structural system consists of a steel frame, composite steel and concrete floors, and special concentric steel-braced frames supported on a conventional spread footing foundation.
In addition to the new building, the project scope included the renovation of 9,000 square feet of office space in the nearby Morris Administration Building.
