Family Pavilion and South Arcade Renovation at the Navy Pier in Chicago. Ken Maschke / Thornton Tomasetti.
Thornton Tomasetti provided structural renewal design for a 110,000-square-foot renovation of Navy Pier’s South Arcade and Family Pavilion. The renovation consisted of a new entrance, grand staircase, drop-off atrium, restrooms, retail storefronts, floor leveling, accommodations for new MEP systems and the replacement and reconfiguration of escalators.
The existing stairs were demolished and replaced with a dramatic, central grand staircase that leads up from the ground level of the Family Pavilion to the Crystal Garden. The current north and south second-floor balconies were connected in front of the new Crystal Garden entryway, and extended west to the top of the grand staircase.
The storefronts for the new retail in the Family Pavilion and South Arcade were constructed with architecturally exposed structural steel. In addition, new MEP systems were routed below a concrete floor in the South Arcade to accommodate retail and restaurants.
