Overview

Thornton Tomasetti is the structural engineer-of-record and is also providing sustainability services for Salesforce Transit Center, a new transit terminal topped by a 5.4-acre public park. The project, awarded through a design and development competition, promises to transform the neighborhood and centralize transportation for the region, as part of an overall redevelopment plan for the city of San Francisco.

The original terminal was built in 1939 to serve as a terminal for East Bay trains using the new Bay Bridge. It was the first time San Francisco was linked by rail to the East Bay, Central Contra Costa County and Sacramento. Today’s Salesforce Transit Center replaces the outdated terminal and will connect eight Bay Area counties and the state of California through 11 transit systems, including the future California High Speed Rail, which will connect San Francisco to Southern California. Funding for the project has been achieved through various sources at the local, regional, state and federal levels.

Thornton Tomasetti’s sustainability consultants are providing services to the Owner as the Owner’s Representative for Sustainability for the project in pursuit of LEED Gold certification. The rooftop park serves as a green roof and improves the surrounding environment by absorbing pollution from bus exhaust, treating and recycling water, and providing a habitat for local wildlife. Other sustainable features include natural daylighting, storm water runoff reduction, water conservation and irrigation, water use reduction and three-stream waste separation for trash, compost and recyclables.

A performance-based design approach was employed, with the performance goal established that the structure survive maximum earthquake shaking without major structural damage or significant loss of function.
