Thornton Tomasetti provided structural engineering services through design development stage for four new structures and one refurbished building at St. Clare’s College, a school for 16-to-18 year olds who are predominantly resident international students. The unique complex incorporates several former residential buildings located within the North Oxford Conservation Area.
The project requires the refurbishment of an existing Edwardian house, as well as the construction of new residential buildings and a new art department. The new buildings are constructed from prefabricated cross-laminated timber panels, chosen for their structural, thermal and acoustic properties, above a precast concrete beam and block system at ground level. The buildings will be connected with each other and with the existing buildings by a series of covered walkways and glazed bridges. Once the new buildings are complete, the complex will encircle the central garden.
