We provided structural design of the fabric roof structure for the 45,000-seat Veltins Arena, a multipurpose venue that hosts exhibitions, concerts, indoor and equestrian sports and motor trials. The long-span movable roof was performed as a design-build project.
The arena’s 224-meter by 188-meter Teflon-coated fiberglass roof is supported on steel two-way cross-trusses. The desired seating arrangement called for a rectangular design. At each corner of the roof, four radial trusses form a quarter circle and connect to the cross trusses. Two operable panels slide open from the center of the roof.
Since its completion, this structure has hosted five matches in the 2006 FIFA World Cup, and has been accredited as a UEFA Five-Star Stadium.
