Thanks to a grant from Thornton Tomasetti’s Corporate Sustainability department, the San Diego office has a place to hold informal gatherings and friendly matches around its new ping pong table.

Our corporate sustainability grants program is just one way that we ensure that Thornton Tomasetti’s workplaces can continue to promote comfort, all-around wellbeing and even a bit of fun. With grant support ranging from the purchase of healthy food subscriptions to office plants and soccer league registration, 2018 was the year employee wellness and workplace ergonomics reigned supreme. Across the firm, offices focused on improving desk-side wellness with standing mats, ergonomic keyboards and massaging chair pads. Yoga classes brought peace of mind to the Fort Lauderdale, New York and Denver offices, while San Diego sparked some friendly competition by getting a table tennis set.
The New York, Madison Avenue office used its grant to improve employee wellbeing with after work instructor-led yoga sessions.
Since 2013, the Corporate Sustainability department has awarded $155,000 in grants to Thornton Tomasetti employees for improvements that have helped green our offices, increased employee wellness and comfort, and assisted volunteerism. With grants going to support initiatives in 21 offices this year, the $45,000 pot for 2018 was well spent on a variety of items and activities to improve indoor air quality, raise employee comfort, reduce office energy use and to help us engage with our communities.
The West Hartford office is greener, and the air cleaner, after it acquired several new plants.
Beyond the office, volunteer opportunities got employees active outdoors. Our Los Angeles team received a grant for Habitat for Humanity sponsorship, and supplies for a service day with the organization. Meanwhile, the Boston office used its grant to offset their paper consumption with a donation to the Canopy Tree Project. Awards also supported environmental improvements, such as the purchase of office plants for better indoor air quality, and upgrades were made to office energy efficiency. Renewable energy certificates offsetting electricity use in offices was also a popular item this year.
For us, sustainability is about engaging in environmental stewardship and social responsibility while also supporting Thornton Tomasetti employees in doing great work.
