The largest rental car facility in the world and the second largest concrete structure in the United States behind the Pentagon, Consolidated Rent-A-Car Center (ConRAC) will consolidate more than a dozen rental car company locations from around Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Part of a larger initiative to improve the overall passenger experience at the airport, the building will connect directly to the Automated People Mover train system and provide 20,000 parking spaces and Quick Turnaround facilities, which will allow speedy vehicle washing, fueling and maintenance.
We provided a suite of protective design and security services to PGAL for the project. A Threat, Vulnerability and Risk Assessment (TVRA) was performed for a range of manmade threats including crimes against property and persons, explosives, armed attacks and cyber threats. The team worked to implement the mitigations identified by the TVRA including structural hardening of the facility.
Thornton Tomasetti worked closely with the developer, contractor, architect and other design consultants throughout the project, and our early involvement during the procurement phase was instrumental in determining the appropriate balance of security versus customer experience for this critical facility.
