Transforming the 1960s-era Key Arena into the state-of-the-art Climate Pledge Arena, future home of the NHL’s newest franchise the Seattle Kraken, has been no simple task. The project required the near-total demolition of the old structure and constructing a new one, all while preserving the historic building’s iconic 44-million-pound roof and façade. Thornton Tomasetti Managing Principal Steve Hofmeister talks to ENR about how the project team was able to shore the existing roof while work went on below and other challenges. We provided structural and construction engineering, including seismic analysis, geostructural support and Advanced Project Delivery™ services, for the Populous-designed arena set to open next year.
