Thornton Tomasetti is providing structural engineering for a 56,000-square-foot museum facility located on an eight-acre site in New Orleans City Park. The Louisiana Children’s Museum at City Park will fulfill the mission of responding to the changing needs of the recovering community by focusing on the enrichment of children and their families. The museum is accompanied by centers for literacy, teaching and parenting, early childhood research, nature and childcare as well as a café and edible garden.
The two-story facility is situated on a raised concrete structure, to increase flood resistance. The second floor and roof consists of exposed steel framing. Additional features include pedestrian pathways and bridge, terraced gardens, enhanced natural areas and learning spaces, picnic areas, multipurpose outdoor spaces and parking. The project is designed to achieve LEED Silver certification.
