Renovating Oriole Park at Camden Yards: Structural Engineering Behind a Modern Stadium Upgrade
Oriole Park at Camden Yards has reopened following a series of upgrades designed to enhance the fan experience while preserving the ballpark’s iconic character.
Thornton Tomasetti provided structural design for key elements of the renovation, supporting new features within the constraints of the existing stadium.
The most visible addition is a new outfield video board, 2.5 times larger than the original. Supporting it required structural reinforcement, including new steel, welded plates, and foundation modifications to address increased loads and wind forces, while incorporating portions of the original structure.
Additional improvements include expanded press and premium areas and new AV support spaces. Much of the work took place behind the scenes, strengthening existing structural systems and enabling new configurations beneath the scoreboard.
