Nationwide Arena
An urban hockey arena was designed to reinforce the visual connection between the ice and the cityscape.
Project Details
Home to the NHL Columbus Blue Jackets, Nationwide Arena opened in September 2000 as a state-of-the-art sports and entertainment facility. The facility anchors the centrally located Arena District, a mixed-use development designed to echo the industrial texture of the capital city.
We provided structural design services for the arena, which features a brick-and-glass exterior that ties into the urban fabric. Expansive lobbies and concourses and a 70-foot, glass-enclosed atrium reinforce the visual connection between the cityscape and the ice. The structure transitions from steel to concrete above the main concourse in a design that took advantage of both the early start capability of concrete and the cost-effectiveness of steel.
