PETCO Park, home of the MLB's San Diego Padres, is located within two miles of an active fault and is designed to meet the UBC requirements of Seismic Zone Four. A noteworthy feature of the stadium is the exclusive use of structural steel above the main concourse level, where structural members are exposed as key elements of the design aesthetic.
We provided structural design services to Populous for the stadium, which was completed in 2004.
- Integration of the historic Western Metal Building, primarily composed of wood and brick, into the ballpark design was a structural challenge.
- At the club and upper concourse levels, the seating cantilevers huge distances of 55 feet and 38 feet, respectively, from the main support structure to provide seats that are closer to the field and the players of the majestic and beautifully landscaped facility.
- This design brings fans closer to the game, while 70- to 100-foot bridges connect the administrative office buildings to the ballpark.
