Valley Health Center, Downtown San Jose

Overview

Located near a transit center and constructed over a future BART station, the Valley Health Center provides urgent care, primary and specialty care services for the Downtown San Jose community. The three-story, 61,743 square foot medical building includes an urgent care clinic, patient exam rooms, and radiology, pharmacy, and blood laboratory functions.

We provided structural design services to Ratcliff Architects for the building, which opened in 2016.

Highlights

• The steel-framed building uses moment frames at the lateral system to preserve flexibility in the space layout, and the building exterior has a combination of pre-cast concrete panels and spandrel glazing.
• Being situated over a future BART tunnel expansion, the building design required close coordination with BART to determine placement of elevator shaft and site improvement approaches.
• A unique precast entry portal was developed to accommodate LED lighting and address challenging support conditions including enabling the entry portal to move independently at each floor level.
