Block A is a mixed-use complex located in downtown Denver’s Union Station redevelopment area. Thornton Tomasetti is providing structural engineering services for the project which comprises a 12-story, 180-room hotel and a five-story 100,000-square-foot office tower. The hotel includes 8,300 square feet of meeting rooms, adjacent prefunction space, a health club and street-level and rooftop outdoor patios. Both buildings sit atop first-level retail and a two-level, 210-space, below-grade parking structure. The project is pursuing LEED Silver certification.
To maximize headroom and provide the best structural performance at all levels of the hotel and office, including level P1 which is below-grade, post-tensioned concrete slab was utilized. The pedestrian bridge sits on slide bearings on the office side of the complex to allow independent movement of each building.
At the hotel entrance area, both at grade level and P1, the building abuts an existing adjacent building. By using knockout panels in the existing building, vehicles are able to access the adjacent parking garage.
Thornton Tomasetti also provided construction engineering services, including tower crane foundation design.
