Zach recently completed integrated structural design and construction support services for the award-winning Port Canaveral Exploration Tower.

Zachary Kates joined Thornton Tomasetti in 1998 and specializes in the structural design of new buildings, the renovation of existing and historic structures, and structural forensics. His design experience is an effective foundation for work in structural investigations, third-party peer reviews, and litigation support of construction claims.

Notable Work
Zach recently completed the 745,000-square-foot Martin Army Community Hospital at Fort Benning, Georgia, and is currently working on the historic renovation of several prominent government buildings in Washington. His passion for integrated structural design and construction services is evident in the award-winning Exploration Tower at Port Canaveral, a seven-story visitor center on Florida’s Atlantic coast. His notable forensic work includes an investigation of the Dulles Jet Center Hangar Collapse.

Teaching and Publishing
Zach has made time to serve as a visiting faculty member at The Catholic University of America in Washington. To his credit are articles in trade publications as well as presentations to industry and alumni groups.

Outside of Work
Zach enjoys traveling with his wife, spending time with his son and daughter, and training for triathlons. Other athletic pursuits include windsurfing, snowboarding, in-line skating and scuba diving. He also enjoys woodworking, riding Harley-Davidson motorcycles and playing the ukulele.
