Coronado Club Room and Boathouse

Overview

Located on the southeast side of Glorietta Bay Park, the Club Room provides space for local youth programs and the Boat House stores nonmotorized watercraft including kayaks, paddle boards and row boats. The buildings also provide a new coastal space for community and cultural events, including movie premieres, live music and family activities.

We provided structural design services to Hanna Gabriel Wells for the combined Club Room and Boat House, which was completed in 2012.

Highlights

• The structure is a combination of wood frame and steel connection with a gravity system consisting of wood joist framing and custom-made exposed glulam trusses.
• Wood shear walls and steel moment frames provide lateral resistance to seismic and wind loads.
• Requirements for natural light and ventilation posed challenges at the roof level where steel Vierendeel trusses were used to allow setbacks for windows.
• The certified LEED Silver facility benefits from scenic views, natural daylighting and a prevailing ocean breeze.
