Elysee

Overview

With views over Biscayne Bay, the 58-story, 649-foot tall Elysee tower is the tallest residential building in Miami's Edgewater district. The 480,000-square-foot building includes 100 residential units, lobby/entrance on the ground floor, amenities at level twenty-nine and level forty-four, podium automated parking on levels two through six and a rooftop pool.

We provided structural design services to Arquitectonica for the tower, which opened in 2020.

Highlights

• The inverted shape presented multiple structural challenges. The perimeter structure needed to step outward as it rises, and the top-heavy tower also experienced more intense wind loading than the average building of this height.
• The structure’s core is also offset from the center to provide better views of the bay. We designed an efficient system of concrete shear walls that wrap around the oddly shaped core, minimizing openings in the walls.
• To mitigate the twisting effect of the offset core in strong winds, we thinned the shear walls at the western edge of the core.
