A Mixed-Use Anchor for Guangzhou, China

Taikoo Hui provides Guangzhou’s 13 million people with over 180 high-end retail, entertainment and dining options in one of the city’s busiest commercial areas. The mixed-use complex features 55-story and 33-story office towers in addition to the city’s first five-star hotel tower atop a six-story podium that includes a library, a theater and a public arts center.

We provided structural design services to Arquitectonica for this 4.8-million-square-foot project, completed in 2010.

Highlights

• One of the most structurally noteworthy aspects of the project is the 1,000-seat theater: an innovative “box-in-box” design completely isolates the theater from the surrounding structure so that external vibrations do not affect the theater’s acoustics.
• The podium has four stories below grade and includes underground parking for 900 cars and a connection to a nearby metro station.
