While Hong Kong, Shenzhen and New York may have the greatest number of skyscrapers, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is leading in innovation with the world’s tallest mass timber building. Ascent, a 25-story residential tower, consists of a lightweight system of cross-laminated timber and glulam over a concrete podium.

In the latest season of “How Did They Build That?” on the Smithsonian Channel, Senior Principal and Milwaukee Office Director Jordan Komp talks about how the project team of Thornton Tomasetti, Korb Architecture, New Land Enterprises and C.D. Smith Construction pushed the boundaries of prescriptive mass timber design, permitting and fire protection to develop an efficient and sustainable structure that set the standard for timber towers.
