Structural Engineering for New Inova Hospitals in Northern Virginia Reaches Topping-Off Milestone

The campus will bring together a 611,000-square-foot inpatient hospital, a 110,000-square-foot cancer center, and a 90,000-square-foot health center, all connected by a central plinth that ties the experience together for patients, visitors, and staff.

A new 110-bed hospital and 140,000-square-foot outpatient center – an expansion of healthcare provider Inova’s Franconia-Springfield HealthPlex – will soon provide the surrounding community with access to state-of-the-art care close to home.

Structural Engineering for New Inova Hospital Campuses

Thornton Tomasetti is providing structural design as well as acoustic and vibration engineering services for two new Inova hospital campuses in Northern Virginia – Inova Alexandria Hospital and Inova Franconia-Springfield Hospital – working alongside design partners Ballinger and Ennead. 

Both projects recently reached structural completion, marked by a joint topping-off celebration. The healthcare facilities are scheduled to open in 2028. 

Inova Alexandria Hospital: Program and Design Scope

The 1-million-square-foot Inova Alexandria Hospital campus, taking shape on the former Landmark Mall site, will include a new hospital with private rooms, an expanded emergency department, specialty care, and a cancer center. 

Inova Franconia-Springfield Hospital: Integrated Campus Expansion

The 807,000-square-foot Inova Franconia-Springfield project includes a new hospital and outpatient facility connected to the existing HealthPlex, with inpatient care, emergency services, and diagnostic imaging.Contact our healthcare engineering team to discuss your next hospital project
