Jonatan has worked in and studied product design, robotics, architecture, construction and structural engineering in many countries.

Jonatan Schumacher joined Thornton Tomasetti in 2010 and is the director of CORE studio, the firmwide virtual incubator of ideas. Jonatan oversees research initiatives and strategic software development related to workflow automation for integrated building design, analysis and fabrication methods.

Having studied in the fields of product design, architecture, manufacturing, robotics, engineering and computer science, Jonatan’s versatile expertise includes digital fabrication, automatic model creation based on performance parameters, computational analysis, web development and building information modeling (BIM) workflow integration through custom automation.

Furthering the Profession
Jonatan actively presents his work at conferences and seminars including KA Connect, Façades Plus, Autodesk University, ENR FutureTech, BIM Futures and American Institute of Architects events. He also lectures and consults on programming, interoperability and parametric modeling at schools including Columbia University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Pratt Institute and University of Southern California. Together with the CORE studio, Jonatan organizes Thornton Tomasetti’s annual AEC Technology Symposium and Hackathon.

Outside of Work
Not a day goes by when Jonatan does not ride his fixed-gear bicycle. He is an avid rock climber and enjoys traveling and photography. Originally from Hamburg, Germany, Jonatan has worked and studied in Dubai, London, Los Angeles and Oslo prior to joining Thornton Tomasetti in New York.
