Alexander Whatley CEng, MRINA, RCNC

Director

Alex Whatley specializes in naval architecture at Thornton Tomasetti. He has significant experience with submarine structures, hydrodynamics, stability assessments, and acoustic signature reduction for complex military and defence systems. His work includes organizing and conducting stability assessments, applying structural risk and reliability methods, and managing technical projects involving ship and submarine design, underwater shock, and hydrodynamic performance.

Alex has worked with the UK Ministry of Defence’s Naval Authority Group on ship and submarine projects, supporting safety policy development and implementation, as well as the development of technology and technical standards. As a former head of submarine naval architecture, he brings extensive experience addressing complex engineering, safety, and performance requirements for confidential defence programs.
