Jeong K. Hong Ph.D.

Vice President

J.K. Hong specializes in advanced design methods and analysis procedures for welded structures at Thornton Tomasetti. He focuses on weld fatigue and fracture behavior in oil and gas, nuclear energy, shipbuilding, heavy machinery, and automotive applications. He uses finite element modeling, structural stress–based fatigue life prediction, and fracture evaluation to assess the structural integrity and durability of complex welded components. He also conducts forensic investigations and failure analyses, and he reviews welding procedures and qualifications for welded steel structures, helping clients identify the root causes of damage and improve long-term performance. Drawing on research into unified fatigue design and evaluation procedures that incorporate weld residual stress effects, he develops practical, code-informed assessment approaches and applies them to a wide range of welded structures in demanding service environments.
