overview

Built in 1919, Building 170 served as a former electrical substation that was part of a 60-acre industrial complex used by the United States Navy until 1962. It located by the Anacostia River three blocks from the historic Washington Navy Yard.

We provided structural design services for the project, which involved adapting the two-story building for use by a retail tenant. The steel-framed building is clad in red brick and features a metal shed roof with a pronounced ridge monitor running the entire length.

highlights

  • The scope of work comprised new lateral system components, including braces, foundations and wind girts, which were integrated into the design of the existing building.
  • Our design also included helical ties to repair cracked masonry.
  • The base building renovation design achieved the necessary building upgrades to efficiently prepare the building for a retail tenant, minimizing disturbance to the existing building and preserving as much of the historic building fabric as possible.
