Overview
The first exhibition of its kind in North America, the 2015 Chicago Architecture Biennial (CAB) showcased new and commissioned projects by more than 60 firms from 30 countries, inviting participants to demonstrate groundbreaking advances in architectural design.
We served as the principal engineering consultant for CAB, providing pro bono work for key installations such as the one-story Chicago Horizon pavilion, winner of the CAB Lakefront Kiosk Competition.
Highlights
- We served as the engineer-of-record for the pavilion and our scope included a peer review of the structural system, design of the foundations and support during a one-week construction period prior to the opening of the CAB.
- The 56’-foot by 56-foot square cross-laminated timber (CLT) roof is supported by 13 glulam columns. The CLT slab was uniquely macro-laminated; strips of two perpendicular layers of CLT slab layers were made composite through our engineered fastener arrangement. This allowed the supporting posts to be arranged in a free-form pattern, with the CLT system spanning as a true two-way slab.
