Overview

Each year, more than 2.5 million visitors flock to the Melbourne and Olympic Parks precinct to attend approximately 600 events, including the Australian Open and concerts by headliners like the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, P!nk and Beyoncé.

Against a backdrop of hostile vehicle attacks on sporting venues in other countries, the Victorian state government chose to deploy vehicle barriers to enhance security at sporting and other crowded venues. We provided security engineering, design and deployment to Land Design Partnership for custom-made crash blocks designed as pedestrian seats, which were installed just before the 2019 Australian Open.

Highlights

  • Because the site included many tree roots and a number of services that required protection, we designed ultra-shallow-mount custom street furniture to minimise construction challenges.
  • We used different types of barriers to ensure a balance between security requirements and pedestrian access.
