Overview

Melbourne Olympic Boulevard serves as the gateway to Australia’s largest sporting and events campus, the 40-hectare Melbourne and Olympic Parks precinct. Each year more than 2.5 million visitors flock to 600 events there, including the Australian Open and entertainment headliners such as the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, PINK, and Beyonce.

Against a backdrop of hostile vehicles attacks on sporting venues in other countries, the Victorian State government decided to enhance security at sporting and crowded venues through the deployment of vehicle barriers. We provided security engineering, design and deployment to Land Design Partnership for bespoke crash blocks designed as pedestrian seats. These were deployed just before the Australian Open in 2019.

Highlights

  • The site included many tree roots and a number of services that required protection. We therefore designed ultra-shallow mount bespoke street furniture to minimize construction challenges.
  • Different types of barriers were used to ensure a balance between security requirements and the need for high pedestrian access.
