Overview

Fire Station #21, a registered historic building which serves as the main facility for San Mateo, was constructed in 1939 with an expansion in 1955.

We provided historic preservation and performance-based seismic design services to CJK Design Group for the renovation, which was completed in 2003.

Highlights

  • This renovation involved a substantial seismic retrofit to comply with Performance-Based Engineering Criteria for continued operation following a moderate to severe earthquake.
  • Strengthening required total reconstruction of the second level, replacement of the roof deck, application of shotcrete to existing walls, and the installation of strategically located braced steel frames.
